Following a fire in a Glasgow restaurant situated just below their home, a family, which included a young child, made a fortunate escape after fire crews arrived to lead them to safety.

Two men, two women and a child were helped down from their top floor tenement flat by firefighters using ladders.

The fire originated from the Steak and Cherry restaurant, which is located below the flats in Sauchiehall Street and is thought to have started in the kitchen.

When the fire crews arrived onto the scene, at about 11pm on Tuesday night, the fire was already rapidly developing.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said:

“Crews had to deal simultaneously with the original fire, its spread to the upper floors and more immediately, a family trapped by smoke in their top-floor flat.

“Due to the construction of these property types, hidden fires spread via enclosed voids and spaces, and are notoriously difficult and dangerous for crew to tackle.”

Area commander Garry Milne was proud of his staff and the work they did during this operation.

He added: “The rescue of this family from the upper floors was a textbook ladder rescue.”

Firefighters are now investigating the cause of the fire.
